1st Prize“Old Becomes New (Again)”“The listed balloon hall, featuring its characteristic barrel roof and partially visible masonry from 1916, is supplemented by an extension for the Academy of Fine Arts, providing studios, labs, and offices.”“The extension on the north side of the balloon hall marks the entrance to the Arsenal. The 26-meter-high head building sits on one third of the historical extension and forms a unified structure with it.”The extension adopts the existing typology of the simply designed utility building. The single-story base is designed as a multi-purpose, ideally column-free workshop. A typical sawtooth roof for factory buildings allows for good illumination of the deep spaces and natural light entry from the north without casting shadows. The south-facing roof will be utilized as a photovoltaic system for energy generation.“The industrially inspired facade of the extension echoes the concept of the existing building as a functional structure and interprets it in a contemporary manner.”“The integration of old and new is accentuated by the contrasting materialization of plastered and unplastered brickwork in the existing structure, as well as the sheet metal facade in the extension.”P R O J E C T D E T A I L S
